Starglass is a clear, glass-like crystalline material artificially crafted by noble Everstar artisans to be used as a high quality magical focus. Starglass is extremely rare and quite expensive, limiting it to Everstar noble families and the black market. The process for its creation is well documented by Gestirn University, but the Duchy forbids the knowledge from leaving its walls.
Starglass is perfectly clear with only minor refractive and reflective properties. Its primary use is for lensing magic; either by reflection or refraction of spells. The Everstar family and the other nobility of the Duchy will use the material as the primary component of their magical conduits (wands, staffs, necklaces, etc). Starglass also gives the ability to see at great distances and at great detail, through walls and even deep into space; large pieces of Starglass are polished into perfect spheres for use as a crystal ball.
Starglass is known to be grown high up in the mountains of the Duchy of Everstar, where the thin air and cold temperatures play a key role in its development. It is also speculated that the local geology contains a necessary ingredient for its creation. Though the nobility are quick to shut down any further speculation on the material’s details. The Everstar have a vested interest in keeping their primary hold on power.
There is no way to buy Starglass on the open market, and it does not have a price. Only a member of the nobility of the Duchy can gift you a small amount of the crystal. Authentic Starglass is rarely found on the black market, and deadly imitations are common with side effects rampant. It is also not known just how much Starglass the Everstar have produced, making its perceived rarity an open question.
A Starglass Eye is a relic made entirely out of Starglass, with no defects, and has been polished into a perfect sphere. It is mainly used for seeing spells – being able to see great distances, the very large, the very small, the unseen, into the mind, and through the darkness. When using two or more, they can be used as a two-way communication device. Starglass eyes can come in many sizes – from pocket-sized to gargantuan room-sized behemoths found at Gestirn University.
